Description:

The Identification Day for Visual Artistic Talent provides a platform for art educators to submit their students' artworks for evaluation to determine potential gifted identification in the visual arts based on the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) guidelines.

Students from kindergarten to grade 12 can submit work with their art teachers to create and submit portfolios of original artworks, such as sketches, drawings, photographs, sculptures, ceramics, paintings, and designs, for evaluation.

Screening and Identification Process Overview

The screening and identification process for identifying students gifted in the visual arts includes the following components:

  1. Nomination of the student for screening/assessment (except when every student in a given grade will be screened).

  2.  District evaluation of the student using an approved behavioral checklist (see page 11 of ODE Gifted Visual Art Handbook)

  3. An evaluation of the student’s Display of Work portfolio using an approved scoring rubric (see pages 12-17 of ODE Gifted Visual Art Handbook).

Districts are required to complete steps 1 and 2 to determine qualification for Display of Work Portfolio evaluation. Districts will be responsible for submitting student portfolios to the ESC to be evaluated on Identification Day for Visual Artistic Talent. Results from the Display of Work portfolio evaluation will be sent to districts within 30 days of the event to the district Gifted Coordinator and/or designee.
